Recently, one of TRAC’s young adults moved into his very first apartment.
As he prepared to leave our office, his arms were full. He carried bags of household supplies, hygiene items, kitchen essentials, a handmade quilt, encouragement cards, and practical resources to help him settle into a safe and stable home.
But what stood out most wasn’t the number of items he received. It was the care behind them.
Later, his coach shared that he became emotional as he read through the handwritten encouragement cards tucked into each kit. He was deeply moved knowing that people he may never meet had taken the time to remind him that he matters and that others are invested in his future.
For many young adults, moving into a first apartment is an exciting milestone. For the youth we serve, it can also be overwhelming. Furnishing a home, purchasing basic necessities, and navigating the responsibilities of independent living often come with significant financial and emotional challenges.
That’s why support from our community partners is so important.
This young man’s move-in supplies came from the generosity of organizations and volunteers across North Texas, including:
- Altrusa International Richardson, which provided move-in kits filled with sheets, pillows, laundry detergent, and cleaning supplies, as well as kitchen supply bags stocked with cooking utensils, dishes, and ingredients for a first meal.
- National Council of Jewish Women Dallas, which assembled bathroom supply bags containing towels, shower curtains, bath rugs, soap dispensers, and other essentials.
- Alumni Xi Delta Alumnae, Junior League of Dallas, and Junior League of Fort Worth, which donated hygiene kits filled with full-size shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other daily necessities.
- Quilters Guild of Plano, which created a handmade quilt to make his new apartment feel a little more like home.
- Hope for the Homeless at St. Elizabeth of Hungary, which provided summer supply bags with sunscreen, bug spray, cooling towels, and sunglasses.
- The TRAC Alumni Association, which assembled stress-relief and self-care baskets featuring coloring pages, shower steamers, fidget toys, first-aid kits, and other items designed to support wellness and resilience.
Many of these supplies were donated directly by these organizations and supplemented through generous support from the Lightner Sams Foundation.
Because of this collective effort, he walked into his apartment with more than basic supplies. He walked in with dignity. He walked in prepared. And perhaps most importantly, he walked in knowing he was not navigating adulthood alone.
Moments like this remind us that lasting change happens when a community comes together around young people. Every donated item, handwritten note, and act of kindness sends a powerful message:
You matter. You belong. We believe in your future.
To our community partners, volunteers, and supporters—thank you for helping make these moments possible. Your generosity does more than fill apartments. It helps young people build stable foundations for the lives they are creating.
