Transition Planning

Housing

TRAC staff is knowledgeable about available foster youth housing resources in Dallas County . TRAC is working with the Dallas Housing Authority and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with the goal of increasing the number of transitional housing programs available to youth aging out of substitute care.

TRAC Housing:

Ashby Assessment Apartments (HUD Transitional Living Program):

The Ashby Assessment Apartments are three 3 bedroom apartments (9 residents) located at Ashby Commons. Utilities and food are provided by TRAC, and a Resident Assistant lives on property to assess and teach life skills. These Apartments are intended for homeless young people.

Gaston Commons Independent Living Apartments (HUD Transitional Living Program): These six apartments are intended for homeless young people who will need long-term housing assistance. The apartments at Gaston Commons have site-based Dallas Housing Authority (DHA) Section 8 vouchers. This program offers housing assistance for one year, after which the young person can apply for a portable voucher for use at other Section 8 locations.

Dallas County Transitional Housing Assistance:

This assistance is intended for young people who need housing assistance while improving their financial situation through the pursuit of job skills and/or education. This program offers rental assistance at scattered site apartments for one year.

Shelter+Care HUD Housing Program:

This program is intended for homeless and disabled young people who need permanent supportive housing assistance.

Buckner Children and Family Services, Inc. Family Pathways Program:

TRAC contracts with Buckner Children and Family Services for four beds in the Family Pathways Program located on the Buckner campus. The Family Pathways program is intended for parenting women who need housing assistance while they complete their post- secondary education.

Emergency Apartment:

This Apartment provides short-term emergency housing for young people who are homeless and have no other resources for housing assistance. This housing option is intended to assist young people while they work with their Service Manager to secure stable, safe housing. Young people may stay in the emergency apartment for a maximum of three working days, with extensions considered on a case-by-case basis.

 

Tarrant County

• All Church Home for Children - The Families Together program offers a single parent with up to three children housing and supportive case management.

• Community Enrichment Center - Adopt-A-Family program is a 24-month comprehensive transitional housing program that assists homeless families.

• Cornerstone Assistance Network New Life Center: The New Life Center is an 18-bed single-room occupancy center in Ft. Worth for single men who are in transition to independent living and are recovering from substance abuse.

• Cornerstone Assistance Network Dwelling Place: The Dwelling Place is a five-bed facility for homeless women with no children in their custody.

• Cornerstone Assistance Network 3CP: 3CP provides transitional housing in scattered sites throughout Tarrant County.

• The Faith Project - Operated by Volunteers of America Texas. This program provides supportive services, including housing, for homeless adults ages 18-21.

• GRACE - Grapevine Relief and Community Exchange. The GRACE Transitional Housing Program is designed to provide formerly homeless persons with housing and supportive case management. Serves Grapevine, Southlake and Colleyville.

• YWCA - My Own Place (Ft. Worth) - transitional housing program for young women in downtown Ft. Worth.

• YWCA -Supportive Living Program (Ft. Worth) - transitional living program for women in downtown Ft. Worth.

Shelters

NOTE: For youth shelters, TEENS must have a referral. Call TRAC (214-370-9300) to get a referral for current or former substitute care (foster/juvenile) youth.

Youth Shelters

Collin County

• City House - short term residential services for youth ages 10 to 17 for a maximum of 30 days.

• The Samaritan Inn - shelter for families, transients, juvenile runaways or other displaced persons from Collin County and surrounding communities.

Dallas County

• Promise House (Dallas) - a short-term, crisis intervention facility for youth ages 10 to 17 who are runaway, homeless or at-risk.

• YMCA CASA Shelter - serves youth ages 10-17 who are runaway, homeless, or in some state of crisis.

Tarrant County

• The Bridge Emergency Youth Services Program - a short-term, crisis intervention facility for youth ages 10 to 17 who are runaway, homeless or at-risk.

Adult Shelters

Collin County

• The Samaritan Inn - shelter for families, transients, juvenile runaways or other displaced persons from Collin County and surrounding communities.

Dallas County

• Brighter Tomorrows - emergency shelter and support services to those in fear of domestic or sexual violence.

• Bunk House - men's dormitory for transients with a capacity of 150 bunks.

• Dallas Life - emergency shelter for homeless men, women and children.

• Family Gateway - provides housing for families in a dormitory-style facility for up to 10 weeks.

• Family Place - provides emergency shelter, food, counseling and case management services at our Safe Campus.

• Genesis Women's Shelter - serves women and children who are forced to seek refuge from violent homes.

• Reconciliation Outreach - program for homeless men, women and children who have been involved in substance abuse or domestic violence.

• Salvation Army - provides shelter to men, women and children.

• Union Gospel Mission - dedicated to providing love, hope, respect, and a new beginning for the homeless.

Tarrant County

• Arlington Life Shelter - Provides short-term shelter and services that help the homeless integrate into society. 817-548-9885.

• Open Arms - Provides assistance to victims of domestic violence, including safe housing and supportive case management. 817-281-1204.

• Presbyterian Night Shelter (Ft. Worth) - provides for the needs of the homeless while respecting their dignity.

• Salvation Army (Ft. Worth) - provides shelter to men, women and children.

• Women's Haven of Tarrant County - Temporary emergency shelter for all victims of family violence and 24-hour crisis line. 

• Women’s Shelter of Arlington - Provides shelter and services to victims of domestic violence.
